OUR APPROACH
To MMD, steel is the backbone of a vibrant community, creating a sustainable livelihood for the people of Africa.
BY CONTRIBUTING TO THE COUNTRY’S RAPIDLY DEVELOPING INFRASTRUCTURE, MMD:
In a sector of the structural steel, where trust and the guarantee of product quality is essential, Fabrimetal conveys to us the comfort and credibility of its products, actively contributing to the success of our projects.
THERMO MECHANICALLY-TREATED
Using heating and cooling stages creates a combination of micro-structural features in the cross section of the rebars. All rebars are ‘hot rolled’ before entering these three stages:
Quenching
Self-Tempering
Cooling
Rebars pass through a specially-designed, fully-automatic, and computerised quenching box. Water is sprayed on the rebar surface to maintain a colder exterior temperature while maintaining a hot interior temperature.
Rebars are removed from the quenching box and left until the surface hardens, creating an outer layer of tempered martensite.
Rebars enter the cooling beds. In this final stage, the austenitic core turns into ferrite-perlite or ductile. The combination of tempered martensite surface and ferrite-perlite core provides a considerably higher strength and ductility to the finished material, making it ideal for building strong structures.
THE MMD GUARANTEE
MMD guarantees the safety, sustainability, and security of our products.
MMD is ISO certified, committed to consistently meeting international standard requirements and exceeding customer expectations through every stage of the manufacturing process.
Our experienced leadership team has a solid track record for building, operating, and monitoring state-of-the-art production facilities, with strong cost management through an existing local supply chain. We offer customers reliability and high-quality products, checked at each stage of the manufacturing process by MMD’s Quality Assurance professionals.
QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST
MMD checks at each stage of the manufacturing process to ensure our products meet the highest international standards.
We use strategic processes, systems, tools, and an eager workforce dedicated to making a positive economic, environmental, and social impact on the sustainable future of Africa.
For this reason, MMD is committed to consistently meeting international standard requirements (ISO certified) and exceeding customer expectations through every stage of the manufacturing process in all of the countries that we operate in.

FAQ
What is MMD’s overall vision?
Our vision is to be a leader in the manufacturing of diverse steel products with access to our own raw materials. MMD is committed to bettering the lives of communities in sub-Saharan Africa. By locally producing quality steel products, we support the people, the country and the environment.
What is MMD’s impact on the environment?
MMD engages in responsible manufacturing for the sustainable future of the countries where we operate. See details on our Sustainability page.
How are locally manufactured steel products equal to or better than imported steel?
Our product quality is equal to European and American standards. We follow a rigid quality testing process that includes testing, retesting and random testing our products to LNEC and BS4440 standards. Random samples are chosen and sent to third-party labs in South Africa and Europe to ensure we are consistently meeting or exceeding international standards. We provide our clients with both an internal certification and a third-party certification with Bureau Vertas or SGS.
What is TMT?
TMT stands for Thermo Mechanically Treated, the technology we use to manufacture high tensile strength rebars. TMT is the process of controlled heating and cooling to change the properties of the steel we make or give it certain characteristics. This method increases the hardness and strength of the steel and improves its resistance to heat, wear and corrosion. It also removes internal stresses (arising from uneven cooling or mechanical work, for example) and improves ductility (the ability to be stretched into wire), machinability (ease in cutting or shaping) and cutting properties.
What is tensile strength?
Tensile strength refers to the amount of stress the steel can endure before failing.
